The engine starts up fine and actually starts almost immediately and runs for a few seconds before dying and then I have to crank the engine for a long time before it finally starts. I don’t run the starter for more than ten seconds / roughly at a time. On a couple of occasions, after several attempts, the battery drains to the point of having to jump start. This only happens when the tractor has been running for a week or two. From a layman’s point of view, it is as if the fuel system has lost its primacy and the fuel line has to be fully “recharged” before the engine can run.

You could try installing a check valve to prevent fuel from flowing back You have a small leak in your fuel system. If it is working properly the fuel will not drain again. You should check all connections and hoses, including the return hose, and make sure there are no leaks. Note that a fitting or hose does not have to have a diesel leak to have an air leak. Check the filter too, it is a common problem with the 5X25 series, there is a fin gasket on the filter priming pump, or it has dirt in it or it needs to be replaced. It is a very common problem.
